I know they are more of a city 4wd, I assume they will have some clearance issues compared to a wrangler or something similar.
But for sand climbs and the likes the v8 cayenne seems like it would do alright.
Does anyone have any first hand experience?
I am thinking it could be a nice compromise between a comfortable daily/weekend/long trip car and something I can have some fun in the desert with. I nearly bought a wrangler when i first got here, but having driven a lifted wrangler on 35's It not something I want to cruise at 140kph up to abu dhabi in.

Unless you have very deep pockets for repairs, no. You do know that desert driving would take its toll on these cars, and when it comes to wear and tear, you should avoid doing it with SUVs. They weren't designed for rough desert driving, regardless of what advertisements would have us believe.
Try an older Tahoe and mod it well. It's comfortable, cheap as chips to fix, and parts are easy to find.

I am not so scared of the euro repair costs like most here. I will not be afraid to thrash the crap out of it in the desert. I do know that desert driving will take it toll on any car.
In saying that I am always open to new idea's and I dont know much about the tahoe's? seem like a decent base. v8 and not too heavy. How reliable are they? What things should I look out for?
Tbh My ideal car in the desert would be an old samuri or vitara with an sr20 heart transplant. But roadworthy would be hard and even if possible would be a pig on the road.

Yeah I have seen that. I would buy if it was still available.
You dont want a Porsche Cayenne for the desert & you would want to avoid the V8 engine on one of these cars... The V8s eat head gaskets as they are made from a material that cannot endure the hot weather conditions of the UAE...
Buy anything primitive and cheap to fix, patrols, cruisers, jeeps.. Vitaras are solid little cars, i got a friend in dhaid that has a couple of old vitaras, i dunno if they are still there..

Yeah I am guessing 1uz aswell. I would have bought it for sure, but it was already sold. Would have just thrown on a couple of r33 turbos and a fuel computer and called it a dayTribal wrote:i guess by "lexuse engine v8" he means a 1UZ or 2UZ..? Damn that things gonna be a real monster in the desert

My favorite 4x4 is the samurai or suzuki sierra where I come from.Just cause they are soo easy to fix/mod, very light, live axle front and rear etc.
The more i think of it, it is stupid to try and have an all in one car. You always sacrifice performance for comfort in any form of motoring fun. So might be best to keep the merc for long trips and daily driving and get a vitara/tohe for fun. The idea of having a 4x4 that would be comfortable on long trips out to the desert was appealing however.
Also I would love a g55. Haven't looked at prices as I assume they are well out of my range
