Speeding driver burnt to death
Wednesday 3 Feb, 2010
A speeding driver was turned into “charcoal” when his car exploded as he crashed into a lorry on Emirates Road in Dubai.
The accident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning when the car erupted in a ball of fire as it smashed into the back of the stationary vehicle at more than 180kph.
The driver of the 4x4, a 25-year-old Emirati man, burned to death inside his vehicle.
Captain Ali Abdullah Al-Kusaib, from the Difficult Missions Squad at Dubai Police, said the driver had lost control of his vehicle and spun into the lorry. “We got there as fast as we could,” said Al-Kusaib.
“The car was burning. Because of the ferocity of the blaze, we were unable to get to the driver.
“Civil Defence arrived shortly afterwards and managed to put out the fire, but by that time it was too late. The driver and his car were like pieces of charcoal.” It’s the type of high-speed destruction that Dubai traffic police still see far too often, one official told 7DAYS. “Accidents like this make us wonder why people still speed. Motorists must be more careful when they are driving,” he said.
“This kind of accident should act as a warning to reckless drivers who just keep putting the pedal to the floor without paying attention to the road around them.”
The accident happened at the last roundabout on Emirates Road as the highway heads out of Dubai towards Abu Dhabi.
Al-Kusaib said initial invest-igations at the scene indicated that the driver had been speeding.
“He was driving well over the speed limit in the right-hand lane. He lost control of the wheel and crashed into a heavy goods vehicle that had stopped by the side of the road,” said Al-Kusaib.
“It appears he was driving at more than 180kph.” Police believe the fire started when the fuel tank ruptured and exploded as the driver was sat inside the vehicle, although it is not known whether he was conscious at the time.
The driver of the lorry was not injured. A full investigation will be carried out to determine the exact cause, police said, and the wreckage of the car will be examined to see if there were any defects, such as faulty brakes.
