A Panhard rod is a component of a car suspension system that provides lateral location of the axle.

While the purpose of the rear suspension of an automobile is to allow the wheels to move vertically with respect to the body, it is undesirable to allow them to move forward and backwards, or from side to side. It is this latter movement that the Panhard rod is designed to prevent.
ok so now i no what a panhard is !! :P ...can anyone translate that to english for me :D it's not making sense to me!!! does it mean that it decreases the chances of making your car steer right and left on a track??? so that it stays in one line???..

Unless you're drag racing that Starlet... the panhard rod (called track bar) stops the wheels from moving forwards in relation to the body when you super-accelerate.

I removed it on my Wrangler YJ to allow for more wheel travel, and the ride became completely soft and briliant off-road - it was fantastic, as if the suspension said "finally I can move!!!!"

On-road however, and I also removed the sway bars, it leaned around corners as if I was navigating a boat!!! LOL

Of course for racing you add a track bar, not remove it... it helps keep the suspension geometry true.

Here's exactly what it does: it allows for up-and-down movement, but blocks forwards-backwards or side-to-side movement on the axle.

Oh wait! Does your Starlet have a live axle? Independent suspension of course cannot take a track bar...
