number of cylinders - power dependant?

ECUs, intakes, turbos, fluids, transmissions, exhausts etc.

Hey all,

A question I had in mind for a while already, is "does the number of cylinders, do something with the power" ?

Imagine, a honda accord, 2.4L i4 engine... or a toyota camry with it's 2.4 V6 ... Would anybody know which one is more efficient (not just max HP, but curve wise), and how?

I mean, the honda would have 600 cc cylinders, which are bigger than the 400cc cylinders of the toyota, though the toyota will have 6 bangs in .. whereby the honda would "only" have 4. 200cc extra, would somehow, I think, result in more tq.. but i dunno...

Anybody has more idea's on this? Oh, and keep this clean please, i don't want any rb vs 2jz crap.

Michael

Good one mike.I was wondering about this thing myself.I guess more cylinders give more torque than power.Guess ur 2.7 V6 has more torque than mine l4 2.4 but the power is same.

People come on.THINK. :D

interisting, what i believe is the opposite really...

i think that the less the cylinders with the same volume of engine will equal more tourqe than horse power, look at the big diesel trucks and such, they have 6 cylinders with more than 6000cc, that equals TOURQUE, the big chamber that a cylinder has the more stroke power it will produce = torque, maybe a downside is that u can't riv such engine alot, which depends on the useage of such application...

another example is the old 454 cubic inch V8 old Chevy engine = 7.4 litre engine.... that's a beast of torque low rpm engine used on old Blazers/impala/suburbans .. while u see V12 engines with a 5.4 litre capacity with much more horsepower but less torque..

im not sure i understand ur question fully Mikeh :?

But the way i see it, the more cylinders you have - the more "potential" you have to make power (if that makes any sense at all).....

Hmm -- lets see, an engine gets power from burning gas... more cylinders, more gas and hence the "potential" to make more power.... (i hoope im getting this right and not sounding dumb :P )

But that doesnt mean that all companies know how to do it 'right'...

the Accord and the Coupe - answers to why the acoord produces the same power as yours could lie elsewhere - the exhaust, intake, even stuff like the length of the stroke and a million other details could play a role.

Maybe your answer lies in compression?? Hondas have pretty high compression ratios (i think) .... ur Hyundai maybe not?

Accord69,

I am rather comparing the camry 2.4 V6 against a Honda Accord 2.4 i4. I dunno if the compression is the same for both, but it's a safe 2.4 vs 2.4 comparison. Only having 2 cylinders more (i dunno if the V engine form would actually do something about the power)
the big chamber that a cylinder has the more stroke power it will produce = torque
Commando.. makes sense though.. interesting. But honda's should have the majority of torque then.. And honda's and torque, it's like Etisalat and Flickr.

Oops.. you're right. My bad.

But again on what you said earlier:
more cylinders, more gas and hence the "potential" to make more power....
Well, the amount of "gas" (displacement I guess) stays the same. But you'll have more "bangs"...

more cylinders on the same displacment will make less torque in my believe, cause it's a matter of science thing, the more the driveterrian objects and complexity the more power is lost in it, so a V8 with a displacment of 5L will produce more torque than a V12 5L, but also less horse power, and i'm talking about 2 engines with the same technology natural aspirated engines.. i don't want anyone to get here and talk about a 12 quad turbo engine and compair it to a natural V8!!

i also used to wonder about this...but the camry V6 is a 3.0 not a 2.4

i think if you look at power size the cylinders matter alot more then the displacment...the only examply i could think of to get you guys to understand what i mean is from the golf GTI...the GTI is 5cylinders....and the normal gold is 4cylinders..they are exactly the same in wieght and other things...the only difference is that extra 1cylinder which makes the GTI fly!!!..i dunno guys..think about it!!..intersting topic bro!

^^ isnt the GTi a turbo ?

and if ur looking at older Golfs - the V5 GTi i think used to be a 2.3L ....

i dont no if its turbo'd Accord...but i no its a 5cylinder and its displacment is the same as the normal 4cylinder golf!!!...

i think ultimatly it depends on the cylinders and the cylinder size!!

why do people put strocker kits on there cars??..they make there 3.0litre engine into a 3.2-3.3 litre??..why??...1 reason is to abviously help with the extensive heat you get from the turbo...but thats only bcoz of the metal the cylinders are made off!!...increasing cylinders and cylinder sizes should increase power and torque!!...i think thats how it works i guess?!..got any suggestions?

Tamu, you're a bit off there.

The current GTI has a 4 cylinder, 2 liter turbo'd engine.

Bore and Stroker kits were always done to increase the capacity of your engine. There's no replacement for displacement, will always remain.

I don't think an extra cylinder will help with the heat of a turbo.. Hot air is hot air, being in 4 or 5 cylinders.
