I understand, no worries. Actually, it seems I already use Castrol (in gold plastic container) though just by chance because the Bridgestone place I change my oil sells it.

I'm going to try to change to another brand this coming oil change, which is next 1000km, and we'll see. In twenty years of driving I've never bothered about oil brand, just price, and I've never felt a difference.

my question is castrol edge 10W60 compare to honda's oil 20W50 here, which one is thicker ?

from here :
http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiong ... Id=7018619

i notice the oil grade" Exceeds latest API SM/CF specification"
but i have a bottle in home which is grade "SL" ? why ?

I am not sure but if I remember it correctly, the first two digits is for the viscosity rating and the last 3 are for temperature ratings. So if this is right 20W50 is thicker but 10w60 has more capabilities handling high temperatures. :|

Please correct me if I am wrong as I am a little bit confused now also.. :D

oil knowledge is too complicate , sample here 10W-60 , 10W relate to cold start temperature , -60 relate to the engine running temperature at 100'C .

Oil viscosity has nothing to do with how good it handles oil temperature.. 0-40, 10-40 oils have the same temperature ranges as that of 20-50, 10-60 oils.. Using a thick oil doesnt mean better heat resistance or protection cuz if the pressure builds up inside the engine from thicker oil it just gets re-diverted back to the sump via pressure relief valve... Castrol's 10w-60, IMHO, is ideal for specific uses or applications such as Turbo charged cars and such.. Plus usually in modern DOHC engines with VVTi you are better off with a smooth grade oil so it flows easily in the tight and complex oil passages..

I was using Enoc 20w-50 3K KM Mineral oil on my car.. Shifted to 10w-40 5K KM AC Delco Semi-Synthetic oil for some AED 20 extra, the engine had a quite noticeable improvement in performance and smoothness of the engine, oil travels much smoothly inside the engine and the semi synthetic lasts longer and doesnt darken as badly as the mineral oil...

Castrol edge - 5w-40
Castrol edge sport - 10w-60

Check what Oil ranges are recommended for such engine, usually mentioned in the car manual.. 5w-40 sounds like a good pick for you, you dont need to go thick as long as this engine is compatible with this oil viscousity..

I use Castrol Magnatec for my Honda's and other 4 cylinders and the Edge Sport for Forced induced cars, like my Cefiro and Supra.

I own a GTI 2012 and I usually top up Castrol 5W-40 every month or every 2000km.
I then wanted to refill but the Castrol was out of stock and the guy in Adnoc told me that we have 5W-40 but adnoc, and it's only a brand name that differs, so the price differ. (Castrol 1L = 60 AED) and (ADNOC 1L = 28 AED).
So, my question is, What is the BEST Engine oil for my GTI 2012?
And does it really differ?
Thanks!
