Hey ppl...just installed a new XFX RADEON HD 4870 1gb ddr5...i got that after something went wrong with ma 8800 GTX...after installation i powered it up...everything was fine...but after about 15 mins the pc just shut down...this kept happening until i opened the casing and checked it out...i noticed the fan on the card wasnt working...it was just making a round and stop ...plus the card had heated up quite a lot...this could be the reason why it powers off...
I am using ZALMAN 1000 watt + quad core 9300 + 3 gb ddr3 + asus maximus board...
i wana know why this is happenin with the new card coz i am sure its not power related coz 1000 watts can go a long way...so any body who can shed some light...?...thanx in advance

The same thing happened with my 4850 2 months ago, and I thought my mobo + proc had died, so I dismantled the whole pic, and with the mobo + proc out of the casing, connected the PSU, RAM, HDD and Graphics card...and it worked. Try it. Do you see any LEDS? I think the 4870 has 1 or 2 red startup LEDs like the 4850 for diagnostics.

What exactly do you mean mobo + proc out of the casing?....Ozimandius wrote:The same thing happened with my 4850 2 months ago, and I thought my mobo + proc had died, so I dismantled the whole pic, and with the mobo + proc out of the casing, connected the PSU, RAM, HDD and Graphics card...and it worked. well i didnt quite notice the leds on the card...if there is then it should be underneath the card coz the top side is fully covered by the cooling fan...i ll check it out..thanx bro...

well, my cooling fan is facing downwards...the LEDs are on the top then. I meant remove the motherboard from the casing, and try running it like how you would a normal pc, by shorting the jumpers to make it start.

Hmm...you mean i literally keep the mobo outside the casing, fix everythin as usual and then power it on?...

But the fan spins...you DO have the latest Catalyst right? It'll tell you the speed of the fan and the temps of the card, but only if the pc starts up. It could be static electricity too. But if you have warranty (I didn't), get it RMA'd.

I have been an NVIDIA fan for quite some time, just got an ATI for the first time...and wola!!!... ...but the 4870 does have a good review...
They checked my previous ASUS 880GTX...told me the display is "GARBLED"...and that they cant fix it...anybody knows wether it could be?..
if it cannot be then RIP 8800GTX...that was awsome card!!
Thanx a lot guys...cheers

I was an nvidia user for years until I realized that ATI could do the same job at less price and less power requirements...but more heat! Good to know you got it RMA'd, how much did the card cost you btw?

The more heat factor has really got me thinking now...did you know the card is a DDR5!!!!???...I was pretty surprised...
There is also a 4870 X2 if you heard...it is 2 cards in one...gota be amazing...its not available here though...
It costed 700...thats a reduction from 880..which they quoted by the way... ....

I was about to buy the 4870x2 a month ago, it's old now...I skipped the 4890 too, waiting for the 5870 to be released, it kicks nvidia's best cards arse in most benchmarks, if not all. But it won't fit in my case, it's ULTRA long.
And the 4870x2 is available, in fact, a friend is selling 2 of them for AED 1800, if interested, let me know.

1800 is a good price...but how long has it been used for?...
even i got a casing with drivebay right next tot he board...cant fit any ultra size cards...and the case is a gigabyte 3d aurora...still no place... ...i had the greatest difficulty with my 8800gtx
i was thinking to go for a crossfire...get two 4870's...i have an asus maximus...and i read it supports the setup...if there are any other boards for the crossfire which is good...then let me know...
